Monique
Barker - Mask Maker & Weaving
I
was born in France and studied decorative and fine
arts in Paris. I became a resident of the Western
United States in 1976.I have resided in Williams since
1987, where I am a full time fiber artist and weaver.
I have practiced in the field of Arts and Crafts with
mediums such as ceramics, basketry, spinning and dyeing.
In 1986 I traveled to Nepal and learned the technique
of hand knotted pile rug weaving under the direction
of Karma Sherap, a Tibetan master weaver.
My mask making skills inspired by the Tibetan ceremonial
mask tradition, have evolved over the years of trial
and error. I have been teaching mask-making workshops
in my studio in Williams. I taught a workshop on pile
rug weaving in Eugene, Oregon and have been part of
various artist demonstrations of fiber arts conventions
in the Pacific Northwest.
