Brashear- Felting
Artist/Teacher
My
needlefelted wool tapestries, masks and sculptures
strive to capture the wild and whimsical side
of life, using both vibrant and muted colors.
I find my inspiration in the amazingly beautiful
environment of the Smith River, the Siskiyou
Mountains, and the Pacific coast and often
sculpt the animals that share this land with
me, such as ravens, bears, blue herons, and
salmon. I use roots and feathers that i find
washed up on the banks of Smith River or local
beaches to create sculptures of goddesses
and other elemental nature spirits.
I use both wet and needlefelting techniques
to sculpt my creations out of wool. I start
with wool batting and roving,, some of which
I hand dye , then use a felting needle to
poke and coax the being out of the wool. Each
sculpture has a special spirit and unique
personality and I get great joy from helping
bring them forth into the world. I especially
love listening to people giggle when they
meet my creations.
For the last couple years I have been leading
needlefelting workshops, both locally and
in Northern California, for both adults and
kids. I love sharing this satisfying and whimsical
art form with people, helping to guide my
students to connect with their own inner creativity
and sense of magic.
