Colleen's Rainforth Handknits for Kids

I was born and raised on a farm south of Auckland, New Zealand, and this being a land where there are more sheep than people, most households would learn to knit. My father (wanting to be a farmer) took the Agriculture Course at High School and in this course they taught cooking, sewing and knitting - in case you farmed in the Southern Alps, where you could be snowed in for up to four months of the year and you had to be able to fend for yourself. My Dad then taught my Grandmother, then my Mother and finally me, to knit.
I like knitting babies and children's garments as there are so many different patterns to choose from - some dainty and lacy, some bold and loud. I try to make every garment a different pattern and having a book with 1500 different patterns in helps with this. It's great seeing a yarn and visualising what that particular colour and type of yarn would look like in a specific pattern. My husband says I have a "passion for yarns and knitting" as I head straight for the yarn section of a shop and he knows where to find me!
